First of a new breed of rocket-propelled
dragsters is the X-l, designed and built
by Reaction Dynamics, Inc., Milwaukee,
Wis. Quickest standing start V4 mile
acceleration time was 5.41 sec and
highest speed just under 260 mph in
May. Liquid mono-propellant rocket
engine produces 2,000 hp at 300 mph,
weighs only 56 lb. Max acceleration
is 2.6 g’s. Dry car weight is 760 lb. Two
ribbon chutes help brake vehicle along
with 4-wheel disc brakes. Dragster is
prototype of larger, more powerful rocket
vehicle to be used in land speed
record attempt.
