Performance Report: Aerodynamic Investigation of 3/8-Scale Automobiles
in the Wind Tunnel: Report Period - 27 January through 15 February 1969

Mr. Dale Bradley reported in at Central Engineering in Detroit on
3 February to relieve this writer and to assume responsibility for the forth
coming wind tunnel tests in March. Model fabrication (clay work) has pro
gressed on schedule with International Styling Studio completing all clay work
on February 11, 1969. Plastics Shop now has the model and should require
about 10 days to complete their work. Therefore the model should be complete
in ample time prior to the tests.

Four front end spoilers for the long extended nose proposal have been
fabricated. Two of these are wrap-around configurations. Incremental effects
of each of these spoilers will be obtained on the long nose. Then when an
optimum nose shape is determined, the non-wrap-around spoilers will be
tested to insure the same incremental values apply.

Using flat plate, two-dimensional flow theory engineering estimates
have been made for loads on the rear deck wing panels. These values are in
good agreement with Pontiacs claim of 70 pounds down force at 80 mph road
speed for the wing panel on their " Judge”. By proper airfoil design these
forces could be increased significantly above this value. Since there has been
no decision as to what function these rear wing panels should perform (i.e.,
down load for stability or drag force for braking or both) we are designing
them as low drag high down force items. They will be rotatable and the effects
of rotation will also be investigated during the tunnel tests. Work orders have
been prepared to get these airfoil sections fabricated at the wood shop. A
supplemental project work order was also submitted to Maintenance Department
on 7 February for construction of a shipping box for the clay front end proposals.
Estimated cost for the box - $150.00.

Dale Reeker, Dodge Product Planning, has expressed a desire to possibly
market these front end designs (if they prove feasible) early enough to allow racing
with it at Daytona in July. Therefore an attempt will be made to move the wind
tunnel tests forward as much as possible (1 to 2 weeks). No contacts have been
made with the tunnel as yet to determine if their schedule will allow this speed-up.
