                              b. Vehicle Thermal Insulation

The fire resistant qualities of second generation foamed polyether
urethane (claimed to be fire resistant) have been dissapointing in preliminary laboratory
               tests.

A fire resistant paint is under investigation as a coating to prevent
flame contact with in ulation. Samples of the paint are being procured for test on the
               insulation.

                              c. Fire Extinguishing System

A low cost ($30. 00) CO2 fire extinguishing system is being investigated
for installation and evaluation on a vehicle. Plumbing of dispersal lines will be made to
susp cted areas of fire sources. Both manual and automatic system activation methods
                     c o
               are under investigation.

Freon, a more expensive fire extinguishing media, is also under
investigation as an alternate to CO2 using essentially the same dispersal system.

                              d. Temperature Recording System

A special low cost recording system for recording long term co I i c
hours) temperatures in a race car during competition was investigated.

The low cost Rustrak temperature recording system was deemed feasible
based on initial studies and cost analysis. A system could be assembled for less than
$300. 00 material to measure temperatures at four locations for extended periods.

                              e. Printed Circuit Board Signal Conditioning System

The design layouts of PC board circuits to replace larger engineering
models of power supplies and signal conditioning system are nearing completion.

This system will allow sub-system spares to be made cheaply and a
repair by replacement in the field to reduce down time. A space and weight savings will
also be realized as well as improved reliability.

This effort is being carried out on a non-interference basis with the
               scheduled test program.
